Mission in Kenya
The City of Refuge is a proud partner and donor of the Mama Tina Foundation. This project, led by Missionary Adriana Bowman, was created by understanding a need in the village of Opoya/Kiugu. The original missionary work here in Kenya was to build a children’s rescue center for orphan babies and toddlers but unfortunately the Kenyan government created a new “Children’s Act” which doesn’t allow new registration of institutions, rescue centers and orphanages.
With the new regulations most children who are orphans and/or HIV/Aids affected will be
returned back to their families. For that reason, there is a dire need for support to the families to allow them to take care of their children.
As a foundation our target will be to select families that adopted the children and empower them through agricultural production. In the target area of Opoya/Kiugu village, most of the families are languishing in poverty and experiencing food insecurity and malnutrition. This is
a result of poor farming practices where most farmers, especially woman, farm
their gardens with little structure by simply casting seeds and waiting for harvest. 80% of
the community depend on farming, yet most of them acknowledge they do not produce enough to sustain their needs and generate income.
Mama Tina Foundation (MTF) is seeking to provide a solution through empowering the families that are supporting the orphans though education on the best farming practices, ideal products to produce and the most efficient resources that will maximize their harvesting results. This will
enable them to support the children being returned to the community. As a Foundation our main target will be to fight poverty through substantial agricultural that will enable the families to become self-reliant in the future.
